‘A mix of the new and the nostalgic, what’s not to love?'
It’s safe to say that summer has arrived. With festival season in full swing, there’s no better place to be than with your mates, basking in the sunshine, pint of Carlsberg in hand whilst some of the world’s greatest musicians serenade you with your favourite tunes.
Here’s to hoping we can ditch the wellies for the sun cream, as this year’s Leeds Festival looks to be a scorcher in more ways than one! The iconic three day event returns to Yorkshire’s Bramham Park from 24-26th of August, boasting a line-up packed to the brim with talent.
Since its emergence in 1999 as an expansion of the long standing Reading Festival, Leeds has become a renowned hotspot amongst festival goers with years passed seeing the likes of Oasis, Arctic Monkeys and Foo Fightersgrace the main stage. Now, as the 19th year approaches, event organisers at Festival Republic show no signs of faltering, as they’re set to host yet another weekend filled with music, marvels and a touch of magic.
As with recent years, revellers can expect blistering headline sets throughout the weekend. The Friday night slot falls to American rock gods Kings of Leon, who’re no stranger to the Leeds main stage. Their 2009 appearance left fans in a frenzy, with crowds pouring into the main arena to catch a glimpse of the Sex on Fire veterans. It’s recommended to head down to the main stage a little early to avoid any disappointment!
Now, it’s no easy to task to follow such a massive act, but have no fear, Saturday night is looking pretty special too. Get prepared for a trip down memory lane as punk rock four-piece Fall Out Boy are set to rock the main arena with their catalogue of classics. With iconic hits such as ‘Dance, Dance’ and ‘Sugar We’re Going Down’, crowds can expect some massive, epic sing-a-longs, and perhaps a sore throat on Sunday morning.
The perfect remedy for that sore throat? Sunday night. The task of closing the festival falls to Californian superstar, Kendrick Lamar. The rapper has been making waves across the globe with his theatrical, awe inspiring performances. As ever, it’s wonderful to see festivals embracing diversity and showcasing an array of musical genres. Recent headline slots from rap legend Eminem have gained a phenomenal response from Leeds Fest goers, and there’s no reason why this set should be any different.
But it’s not all about the headliners. Each and every day is brimming with an eclectic mix of amazing artists, all ready to bare their souls from various stages across the festival site. Friday sees the likes of Manchester indie lads, The Courteeners take to the stage, alongside rapper J Hus and world renowned DJ Hannah Wants.
Saturday is filled with performances from the likes of Travis Scott, Post Malone, The Kooks and the notorious Annie Mac. Last but by no means least, Sunday will be laced with sets from pop-punk legends Sum 41, Panic! At The Disco, Pendulum, Kate Nash and the biggest new force in pop, Dua Lipa. A mix of the new and the nostalgic, what’s not to love?
Wait, there’s more. As well as playing host to a whole bunch of incredible musicians, Leeds Festival has become famed for showcasing some of the greatest comedians around. This year’s comedy stage will feature stand up from the legendary Harry Hill, the North East’s Chris Ramsey and everyone’s favourite guy, Big Shaq.
It’s clear to see why Leeds Festival has established itself as one of the biggest dates in the musical calendar amongst music fans, and it looks as though we’re set for another incredible bank holiday weekend at Bramham Park. Let’s cross our fingers for the sunshine.
