Michael Gira (Swans), Plays Newcastle's Boiler Shop

Updated: Apr 9, 2019

Michael Gira is heading to Newcastle as part of his European solo tour.

Swans lynchpin Michael Gira is set to play two UK dates next month. The American singer-songwriter is heading to Newcastle’s Boiler Shop on Tuesday 20th February as part of his European solo tour.

Throughout the years, Gira has become famed for his creative contributions to the music industry, forming the New York based band, ‘Swans’, fronting folk band ‘Angels of Light’, amidst working on his own solo material. Swans were renowned for their raw rhythm and abrasive textures, contributing to their overall experimental and post-industrial sound.

Although their commercial success was limited, the band ensured Gira gained a devoted following. His time with Angels of Light saw him following a new musical direction, and experimenting with different soundscapes and textures; displaying his broad range of innovative talent.

The multi-instrumentalist has released countless albums over the last 40 years, as well as founding his own record label, Young God Records. The label has gone on to sign such talents as Devendra Banhart and Mi and Lauamongst others. Now, he is embarking upon his greatly anticipated solo tour.

“Creator of some of the most intense, darkly poetic music ever to emerge from the States, he inspires a devotional following from the musicians and fans he has influenced over the decades.” - Clash Solo Live Review.

Support for the evening comes from Okkyung Lee Music Group. The Korean artist is celebrated for her contemporary cello performances. She’s released over 20 albums throughout the last decade, with her composition skills leading her to receive the ‘Doris Duke Performing Artist Award’ in 2015.

Michael Gira will play Newcastle’s Boiler Shop on Tuesday 20th February. Tickets, priced at £15.00, are available from ticketweb.uk.
